Glossary of Terms

  1. Administrative Contact

    This is the person designated by the Registrant to make decisions on behalf of the Registrant about the Domain Name.

  2. Billing Address

    The Billing Address is the postal address that will receive the hard copy Invoice for the Domain Name(s). If the Billing Address is not specified, the Invoice will be sent to the Administrative Contact address.

  3. ccTLDs (country code Top-Level Domains)

    This is a set of Domains which correspond to the majority of countries round the world. Some of these countries, including the UK, have subdivided their Top-Level Domain into Second-Level Domains. Some examples of ccTLDs include .uk for the Unided Kingdom, .us for the United States, .es for Spain and .de for Germany.

  4. Domain

    In the context of registering a Domain Name, a Domain refers to the type of Domain Name that is being registered, such as .com, .co.uk, .org.uk, etc...

  5. Domain Hosting

    Domain Hosting means supplying Name Servers for a Domain Name. Every Domain must have at least 2 Name Servers that are listed on the Naming Authority Database and are authoritative for the Domain Name (respond to queries from the internet).

  6. Domain Name

    A Domain Name is an Internet address which can be used for an email account or a web site. Examples would be 'beepweb.com' and 'beepdomains.co.uk'. These could be used for email addresses such as 'admin@beepweb.com' and 'help@beepdomains.co.uk' or for web sites such as 'www.beepweb.com' and 'www2.beepdomains.co.uk'.

  7. Domain Name Parking

    Domain Name Parking is the term used when a domain name points by web forwarding to a holding page because the Registrant is not currently using the domain name.

  8. Domain Name Space

    The Domain Name Space is the sum total of all possible Domain Names. The Domain Name Space is organised by various Organisations around the world who decide what Domains should be made available. Presently, there exists two main types of Domains: the gTLDs (general Top-Level Domains) and the ccTLDs (country code Top-Level Domains).

  9. Domain Name System (DNS)

    The Domain Name System is a distributed database of Domain information. This is maintained by the Naming Authorities along with all the Name Servers around the world. This database is used by the Internet to lookup Domain Names and retrieve the relevant information to make the Domain Names services work.

  10. Email Forwarding

    Email Forwarding is a service that redirects emails addressed from their original recepient email address to another email address. This means that a Domain Name may be used as the email address for an existing email account.

  11. gTLDs (general Top-Level Domains)

    The gTLDs were the first Top-Level Domains available and include the '.com', '.net' and '.org' Domains.

  12. Hostmaster

    A Hostmaster is the role established within the Internet community that handles emails related to network administration including Domain Name responsibilities.

  13. Internet Protocol (IP) Address

    An IP address is a numeric addressing scheme that uniquely identifies computers or networks on the Internet. An example would be '195.13.108.200'. Domain Names are mapped onto IP addresses in order to provide an address that is easily remembered.

  14. Invoice

    This is a hard copy bill sent by BeepDomains (BeepWeb Limited) to the Administrative Contact for Domain Name registrations and renewals.

  15. Name Servers

    Name Servers are computers that are connected 24 hours a day to the Internet that have the required software and data to maintain Domain Names and their related services.

  16. Naming Authority

    A Naming Authority is an organisation that has been designated to handle the administration of the Domain Name database for a particular Domain.

  17. Registrant

    The Registrant is the Domain Name holder (the entity that uses the Domain Name). This can be an individual or an organisation.

  18. Registration

    A process by which Domain Names are assigned to a Registrant. Registrations are made with a Naming Authority and last for a registration period (usually one or two years). Once the initial registration period expires, the Registrant has the option to renew the Domain Name registration for a further registration period.

  19. Renewal

    A process by which Domain Names are reassigned to the Registrant for a further regitration period after the initial registration period has expired.

  20. Reply Email

    This is an email address specified by the customer that will receive the confirmation email for a Domain Name order. The Reply Email Address must be an existing and active email address that is not based on the Domain Names being ordered.

  21. Second-Level Domain (SLD)

    In a Domain Name, this is the label that appears second from the right. An example is the label 'co' in the Domain Name 'www2.beepdomains.co.uk'.

  22. Terms and Conditions

    The Terms and Conditions are a predefined set of rules that all BeepWeb® customers have to read, understand and agree to in order to use the BeepDomains Service.

  23. Top-Level Domain (TLD)

    In a Domain Name, this is the label that appears furthest on the right. An example is the label 'com' in the Domain Name 'www.beepdomains.com'.

  24. UK Domain Name Certificate

    The UK Naming Authority issues Certificates for each UK Domain Name that is registered. All Administrative Contacts for UK Domain Names must complete a Certificate receipt and send it back to the UK Naming Authority using the enclosed pre-paid envelop.

  25. Web Forwarding

    Web Forwarding is a service that redirects an Internet browser to load an existing web site from a given Domain Name. This means that a Domain Name may be used with existing web space. In this instance, the Domain Name is prepended with the ' www.' label.

  26. Whois

    Whois is a searching facility that looks up information about Domain Names in the Naming Authority databases. The results inlcude simple information such as the Registrant and the date on which the Domain Name was registered. The Whois search facility is abailable from BeepDomains at www2.beepdomains.co.uk/whois.html.
